The beginning of the school year can feel like a lot.<\/p>

You are learning names, building relationships, teaching expectations, and figuring out how your classroom will run. If you are also teaching French, it can sometimes feel like one more thing to add to your already full plate.<\/p>

But one thing I have learned over the years is that French does not need to feel like an extra thing.<\/p>

When students know what to expect, French becomes a natural part of the classroom.<\/p>

Young learners thrive on routines.<\/p>

When students hear the same phrases, participate in the same activities, and follow familiar routines, they spend less time trying to figure out what is happening and more time engaging with the language.<\/p>

A simple greeting routine, calendar routine, song, or centre rotation can become something students look forward to because they know what to expect.<\/p>

They know how the routine works, which allows them to focus on using the language.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

One of my favourite parts of using routines is watching students become more independent.<\/p>

At the beginning of the year, you may need to model every step. You may repeat the same directions many times. You may feel like you are constantly reminding students what to do.<\/p>

That is completely normal.<\/p>

With consistency, students begin to take ownership. They know the routine, they know the expectations, and they can participate with less support.<\/p>

This is especially important during French instruction. When students are comfortable with the routine, they can focus more on the language and less on figuring out the activity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

I think this is one of the biggest mindset shifts for teachers.<\/p>

You do not need a brand-new activity every day to keep students engaged.<\/p>

Sometimes the best activities are the ones students already know.<\/p>

You can use the same centre structure, the same games, or the same routines and simply change the vocabulary or theme.<\/p>

This saves time, reduces prep, and helps students feel successful.<\/p>

Sometimes teachers worry that repeating routines will make French class less exciting.<\/p>

But repetition is how students learn language.<\/p>

Students need to hear words and phrases many times before they feel comfortable using them. Familiar routines give students the confidence to participate because they know what is expected.<\/p>

The routine might stay the same, but the learning can continue to grow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
