And if you teach Kindergarten or the early primary grades, you are probably also noticing some pretty big differences in fine motor skills.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Some students will pick up a pencil and start writing their name right away.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Others are still working on how to hold a crayon, use scissors, or manipulate small objects.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That is completely normal.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">I like to build lots of fine motor opportunities into the beginning of the year without making them feel like another \u201clesson.\u201d Centres, play, art, and simple table activities are perfect for this.<\/p><p>Here are a few of my favourites.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be990e4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"be990e4\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-79fec4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"79fec4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Play Dough<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-695ffc8 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"695ffc8\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14986fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14986fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Play dough is a staple in my classroom for a reason.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Students are squeezing, rolling, pinching, flattening, and manipulating the dough without even really thinking about the fine motor work they are doing.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Add cookie cutters, small tools, loose parts, or letter\/number cards and you can easily turn it into a centre.<\/p><p>You can also sneak in some French vocabulary while students play. Try making a collage, filling in a shape, or creating a seasonal picture.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It is also an easy one to connect to language learning. Students are working on hand strength and coordination while also sorting, counting, matching, or using vocabulary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">I don&#8217;t expect every student to be ready for detailed cutting at the beginning of the year.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Instead, I like to give students plenty of opportunities to simply practise.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Cutting strips of paper, snipping around lines, cutting pictures, and gluing pieces together all give students a chance to work on those skills without the pressure of creating a perfect project.<\/p><p>Sometimes the goal really is just to practise the skill.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a98378 e-grid e-con-full e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8a98378\" Let them practise.
