January is a whirlwind! Between getting back into routines and re-engaging students after the break, it can feel like there’s no time to add anything extra to your plate. That’s why I love sensory bins or tables—simple, engaging, and low-prep activities that keep students busy while supporting important skills. Sensory bins can be great to support calm transitions, fine motor development, and sparking creativity.
Here are three of my favourite low-prep sensory bin ideas for this busy time of year:
1. Scrap Paper Cutting Bin
Have a stack of scrap paper lying around? Sure you do! Go check the photocopy room – I guarantee there will be scrap paper in there! Toss it into a bin along with some kid-friendly scissors and let your students cut away! My students love those fancy scissors that make the cool patterns! Cutting is a fantastic way to strengthen fine motor skills, and the colourful scraps left behind can be reused for collages or crafts. Win-win! This activity is mess-free and takes minutes to set up.
2. Winter Wonderland Bin
Fill your bin with cotton balls, plastic snowflakes, or pom-poms for a wintery touch. Add tweezers or tongs for students to practice grabbing and sorting items by size or colour. This bin is perfect for reinforcing sorting skills while fostering imagination!
3.Snow Play
There’s something magical about playing with real snow, and it’s so easy to set up! Simply grab some snow from outside, place it in a large sensory bin, and add a few shovels, pails, and mini mitts. The kids will love scooping, packing, and exploring!
The best part? As the snow starts to warm up a bit indoors, it gets sticky, perfect for making tiny snowballs or experimenting with building! This activity not only keeps kids engaged but also brings a fun winter element into the classroom without braving the cold for too long. And when you are done, toss it back outside!
Why Sensory Bins?
Sensory bins provide endless opportunities for open-ended play and exploration, which helps students focus, regulate their emotions, and engage in meaningful learning. These activities are low-prep but high-impact—perfect for those hectic January days when time is short but engagement is key.
