As educators, we know the magic that can happen when we offer students opportunities to engage in hands-on learning. My Building of the World Cards have been a game-changer in our classroom building centre, not just for the intended purposes but for the unexpected benefits they’ve brought to our daily learning.
Here are some of the most surprising wins I’ve seen since incorporating these cards into my classroom:

1️⃣ Cooperation and Problem-Solving Skills Flourished
What started as a simple activity quickly turned into a collaborative experience for my students. Building structures based on the cards encouraged them to communicate, negotiate, and delegate tasks.
It’s amazing to see students step up as leaders, share ideas, and celebrate their successes as a team. These problem-solving experiences are real-world skills in action, disguised as play.
2️⃣ Engagement and Active Learning Took Center Stage

There’s something about these cards that captures students’ imaginations. Whether it’s constructing the Eiffel Tower or recreating a tiny version of the Great Wall of China, the students are all in.
The best part? They’re not just building—they’re learning about the landmarks and the cultures behind them. This natural curiosity keeps them engaged far longer than many other activities, making it a staple in our centre rotation.
3️⃣ Fine Motor Skills in Disguise

From balancing blocks to carefully aligning materials, students are strengthening their fine motor skills with every move. These seemingly simple tasks are building hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and muscle control—all of which support skills like writing, cutting, and drawing.
One student recently exclaimed, “This is harder than it looks!”. It was a reminder of how much effort these little hands are putting in—and how much growth is happening along the way.
What This Means for You
If you’re looking for an activity that blends creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on learning, my Building of the World Cards might be just what you need. Not only do they inspire exploration of global landmarks, but they also bring unexpected benefits to social-emotional growth, motor skills, and active engagement.
