What Students Really Need This Time of Year (It’s Not More Work)

By this time of year, it can start to feel like a push to the finish.

There’s still so much to cover.
So much you should be doing.

But in my experience, this is actually the time to pause and ask:
what do students really need right now?

It’s Not More Work

It’s easy to feel like we need to keep adding.

More activities.
More practice.
More structure.

But a lot of students aren’t struggling because they need more.

They’re struggling because they’re tired.

What I’m Seeing More of

In my Student Services role, I’m seeing:

  • More big emotions
  • More difficulty with focus
  • More students needing support with regulation

And honestly, it makes sense.

It’s been a long year.

What Actually Helps

What’s made the biggest difference isn’t adding more — it’s leaning into what already works.

Things like:

  • Predictable routines
  • Simple, familiar activities
  • Quick movement breaks
  • Time to reset and reflect

When students know what to expect, they feel safer.
And when they feel safe, everything else becomes easier.

Small Moments Matter

Some of the most important moments right now are the small ones.

A student waving in the hallway.
A quick check-in.
Helping a student step out, reset, and come back ready.

Those moments build trust and that trust carries into the classroom.

Keep It Simple

This isn’t the time to overhaul everything.

It’s the time to:

  • Keep things consistent
  • Lower the pressure
  • Focus on what’s working

Simple doesn’t mean less effective.
In many ways, it’s exactly what students need.

The Takeaway

If things feel harder right now, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.

It might just mean your students need something different.

Not more.
Just simpler, more supportive, and more predictable.

And sometimes, that’s where the biggest growth happens.
